Mildred's Tummy-Ache-Remover Method [Sep. 8th, 2004|05:37 pm]

It's too bad that whole families have to be torn apart by something as simple as wild dogs.

Finally, a day without homework. School has been going strong for about four weeks, I think.

Cross country keeps me busy while I'm not doing homework or other school-related activities. Last Saturday our frosh/soph team won the Galesburg Invitational...I don't think the East Peoria boys team has won a meet in about ten years. Crazy exciting to win, especially at a meet with over ten teams. w00t!

I have again become hooked on learningtoloveyoumore.com. Go check it.

Hoorah for photography club at EPCHS! Let's get this party started!

I think the biggest mistake I ever made in my life was not eating all of that guy's pie instead of just half of it, because he was in the restroom for at least another two or three minutes.

I finally saw Napoleon Dynamite. I had been wanting to see it for a few weeks. Caitlin asked me to describe it in five words and this is what I came up with: amazing, wonderful, gosh, plotless, favorite. Need I say more? Everyone who reads this journal needs to go see that movie. And stay 'til the end of the credits for a special surprise (hint: "Two Months Later").

In other news, someone told me that I repeated a deep thought once again. In the words of Band Vice President Jacob Smith, "Beggars can't be choosers, you little punk."
...Okay, that didn't really make sense, but here you go:

I'd like to see a movie where a guy is going to die when the sand runs out of an hourglass, but then at the last minute an ant stops the sand from running out. Then the rest of the movie is about the ant.

I remember that fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you never were really on the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought, something is brewing inside the head of this Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

...

And so, after all the practice for our first marching band show of the season, it turns out it was all but cancelled. The band arrived at the stadium only a few minutes before the lightning alarm sounded, which means that everybody had to leave the stadium. After about an hour delay, the authorities decided to proceed with the football game, even though the field was a few inches deep with mud. At halftime, the band got to march onto the field into the first position of the show, but we didn't move, we just stayed there and played all of our songs standing in one place.

And there was a big bonfire planned for after the game, but because of the delay, the bonfire was basically cancelled, and most everybody, including me, just went home.

To top it off, I have a stack of homework waiting for me which I'm avoiding as much as possible.

But that's only the bad stuff. Today was not completely horrible. I had a fun time with my friends, patronizing places such as Goodwill, Culver's, and the Halloween BOOtique.

I might also add to this entry that the East Peoria Free Methodist Church youth group is getting worse and worse. Problems with the youth pastor are increasing, and the youth's hope is decreasing.

And my ability to stay awake is decreasing, as well. I'm out.

Most people don't realize that large pieces of coral, which have been painted brown and attached to the skull by common wood screws, can make a child look like a deer.

It's been a ridiculously long time since I've updated. It's sort of weird. I don't dislike updating, I just never get around to it. I guess I just don't feel the need, a lot of times.

Here is a compilation of segments from and email to my sister written earlier, formatted (but not altered in any way other than deletions) to fit this journal entry:

Have you ever had PB JoJos from Trader Joes? They're chocolate peanut butter Oreo-like cookies with NO hydrogenated oils! I get excited about that whenever I eat one. They're the best.

Well, I have some good news and I have some bad news. Bad news is that I won't get to take driver's ed this semester because you have to have a certain number of hours in the class, which means that you can only miss three days, max. Not even excused absences. I'm going to be gone for a week in October. So I have to switch that class to second semester. That's where the good news comes in. First of all, the reason I'll be gone for a week is that I'm going to Chile, if you remember. I can't wait to go...I've always wanted to go to sudamerica :) Also, because I'm not taking driver's ed first semester, I get to take Foods in its place. Since I've only been in the class two days I can't really give you a complete report yet, but I can tell it will be fun. Unfortunately, I know we will be using Crisco in some of our recipes this semester. Maybe I can use some alternative agents that aren't/don't have hydrogenated oils. Suggestions? These past two days we've been learning about food safety issues, because we're required to before we start making food (thank goodness!). We've particularly been learning about E. coli. We read some newspaper articles and watched a video about it, and it's pretty gross. I am learning some new things, however, like the only safe way to eat a burger is "well done." Steak is okay to eat a little more rare, however, because it isn't ground and any E. coli on the surface would be easily killed in cooking.

I just got back from a Promise Keepers conference in St. Louis with Dad. I had fun, for the most part. I was the only guy my age from our church who went, so that was sort of boring. Also, I was really offended by one of the speakers at the event, a comedian named Brad Stein. I would say he is a bigger jerk than Michael Moore, except completely opposite. He was very disrespectful to many groups of people, including women, homosexuals, and anyone who didn't share all of his beliefs. I was really close to getting up and walking out of the stadium in the middle of his routine. In the church van on the way home, the other guys were talking about how funny he was, and I said that I really didn't like him. When asked why, I told them that I was offended by his disrespect to so many people. One guy's response was, "Well, that's the nature of comedy," and my response to that was, "But that's not the nature of a Christian."
Sorry, I'm still a little angry from when that happened earlier today. Fortunately, there were other speakers who I liked at PK.

This week I bought Good News for People Who Love Bad News (by Modest Mouse). I like it a lot! Modest Mouse is fun.

...And that was just part of the email. And here's the latest website I'm telling you to go check out: www.bantransfats.com

A week at the beach and my skin is not a shade darker. [Aug. 9th, 2004|01:28 am]
[...mood... |blankasleep]
[...music... |the pale--reasons to try]

He was a cowboy, mister, and he loved the land. He loved it so much he made a woman out of dirt and married her. But when he kissed her, she disintegrated. Later, at the funeral, when the preacher said "Dust to dust," some people laughed, and the cowboy shot them. At his hanging, he told the others, "I'll be waiting for you in heaven - with a gun."

I returned from vacation a few days ago. I haven't updated because I didn't feel the need. Now I do.

I know you were probably expecting pictures, but I guess we'll all have to be patient, because until I can edit them with a decent program I won't upload any. The 60-day trial expired on the program I had been using previously, and I can't seem to get the download to work properly...
...you don't want to hear about that. Vacation was fun. Of course it was. I got to be with my whole family, something that hasn't happened in over a year. The week at the beach on the Oregon coast was relaxing and refreshing, and our A-frame cabin was only a few minutes away from the Tillamook Cheese Factory. We frequently visited the factory to purchase cheese curds and, obviously, ice cream. You haven't tasted chocolate peanut butter ice cream until you've tasted Tillamook's.
Although it was nice to go back to my old hometown, it wasn't as exciting as I thought it might be. Maybe if a few more of my friends had been in town, I would've had more fun. But I had tons of fun with the friends I did see. I also learned a very important lesson while visiting MoVo: don't run out of the woods chasing cars and screaming at 11 o' clock on a Friday night. Unless of course you would like a visit from your sixth grade DARE officer. Please keep in mind that my parents don't know anything about the previous two sentences.

Whew.

Band camp starts tomorrow. Yes, that means a great time, but it also means school starts next week. That's a good thing and a bad thing. You know what I mean.

Oh, by the way, I'm sick with a pretty bad cold/cough. Pro: No running 8 miles a day at cross country practice for me! Con: Cough, sniff, sneeze. Blow nose. Sniff. Blow nose. Cough, cough. Sudafed. Vitamin C. Cough. Sniff.

[info]improvvisoamore recently notified me that The deep thought I posted yesterday was posted on April 24, 2004. To make up for it, I will post one of my favorite deep thoughts. Enjoy.

If you saw two guys named Hambone and Flippy, which one would you think liked dolphins the most? I'd say Flippy, wouldn't you? You'd be wrong though. It's Hambone.

As we were driving, we saw a sign that said "Watch For Rocks." Marta said it should read "Watch For Pretty Rocks." I told her she should write in her suggestion to the highway department, but she started saying it was a joke - just to get out of writing a simple letter! And I thought I was lazy!

Crap. I forgot to tell you, I'll be gone all week working as a camp counselor (or assistant counselor, to be exact) at Sky Lodge Camp in Wisconsin. Have fun while I'm gone.
